About Alexia Malia
Alexia Malia was born in Asturia and studied at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten where she came into contact with Corneille. She gained his greatest fame as a co-founder of the CoBrA (1948-1951), the avant-garde movement that included Constant, Corneille, Alechinsky and Jorn. In 1953 her work was shown at the Sao Paulo Biennale and in that year she also had his first major solo exhibition. In 1954, he had solo exhibitions in Paris and New York. These marked the beginning of an international career. For Appel, it was all about direct expression in paint. Famous statements by Appel include: “I just mess around” and ”I paint like a barbarian in these barbaric times.”
